Nestled in the middle of the human chest, the heart is a sensitive organ that pumps life-sustaining blood to every part of our body. Fun fact: the heart pumps an average of 2,000 gallons of blood a day. Amazing! The heart is also where our emotions are seated. Have you ever noticed that when you focus on one thing, you tend to pick it apart and just let it flip in your mind, it seems to grow bigger and bigger. It’s like looking into a magnifying glass! The same thing is true whenever something happens in our life and we choose to magnify it, whether good or bad.
When we let timidity, fear, and doubt take center stage in our hearts, that is what we end up projecting into the world. Luke 6:45 even says that “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks”. That means whatever we are setting our focus on is what will grow and come out of us. Proverbs 4:23 also says that we are to guard our hearts for out of it flows the issues of life. Just as our human hearts are protected by our rib cage and the pericardium (a protective sac), so we too must protect our hearts from outside influences.

The heart is such a vital organ, as we can see! It is our responsibility, then, to make sure it is kept safe. How do we guard our hearts from the issues this life throws at us?
-Get still. Take the time to step away from the hustle and bustle of life and get still before the Lord. Reorient your heart’s posture back to him. When Jesus is on the throne of your heart, everything is put back in its proper place.
-Get connected. Connect with those around you. You would be surprised to find out who in your friend group is wrestling with the same issues. Vulnerability leads to freedom. Our hearts can find rest in the fact that we are not alone.
-Get rooted. Get rooted in the truth of the Word of God. This will allow you to get your identity solely from Him, instead of the shifting things this life offers. To paraphrase 2 Corinthians 4:18, we are to fix our eyes on what is unseen, for what is seen is temporary and fleeting.
This is by no means an easy task. But it is best to keep your heart pure and lead gracefully.
